The Twilight Service-Learning Gathering

A great crew of educators from a number of Lutheran schools gathered at the end of Term 1 to dive deeper into the Service-Learning space.  As part of our 2021 focus on listening to diverse voices, we had the privilege of hearing guest presenter, Liliana Sanchez from the organisation ‘Moving Cultures, Moving Stories’. Coming to Australia as the young daughter of political refugees, Liliana shared her story of what it meant to belong, and her journey as ‘the other’.

The central theme to the afternoon was exploring resources around the concept of ‘boundary crossing’ and how this can be explored in the classroom. We engaged in big questions such as:

  • Who is ‘the other’ in my community?
  • How can we help students step over boundaries of familiarity, to learn something new about ‘the other’?
  • How can we include Service-Learning concepts in the curriculum?

It was particularly exciting to have such a spread of schools represented at the gathering, and the collaboration and networking that could take place afterwards with a wine in hand!
