Here is a role play that a senior administrator might like to use in your school.
Instructions – Introduce yourself as a “Fire and Emergency Services Safety Officer”. Ask to see those fire safety documents that by regulation are required to be immediately available for inspection. The school’s receptionist provides you with the “fire folder”.
Here is your checklist. The completed Fire Plan in the prescribed form showing among other things:
- The identity and training of your Fire Safety Adviser
- Who did and when was fire training done
- What was done in the fire training
- Personnel responsible for planning and carrying out evacuation procedures
- What those procedures are
- Certificates of Classification for all buildings from 1 July 1997 onwards.
- Any PEEPs that exist (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans) for those who can’t manage the general evacuation
- Examples of the school’s evacuation diagrams
That is what is mandated to be up to date and be in that folder at any time.
The officer will possibly want to see evidence of:
- The maintenance of fire installations
- Feedback from the last fire drill
- The current occupier’s statement
All mandated information is best stored together in the “fire folder”. If all items are produced immediately without delay, then affirm your staff because they have given every indication that the school understands and actions its fire safety responsibilities which hopefully translates into good practice.
VSC 4
Following initial technical issues with the change by LEA to an upgraded platform, feedback indicates that the new version has rolled out successfully and is part of new staff induction in many LEQ schools. There are a few school trainers who haven’t upgraded to VSC4. I will be encouraging them to do so or advising that VSC training is not part of their school role anymore. Please make sure your LExICON administrator is keeping staff profiles up to date as they are critical for VSC and a many other processes.
Note – New VSC Trainers’ Day Workshop is set for 31 July 2019. More information to come.
Combustible Cladding Registration
Thanks to all those schools that have submitted their information so it can be entered into the LCAQD property database. For those schools that didn’t have to register any buildings, your task is complete. Some that registered have indicated that no further action is required while others will have to proceed to Stage 2, possibly Stage 3. If your school is in the latter groups, please plan to attend to the requirements well before the Church deadlines (to be announced).
