Under WHS legislation, PCBUs (person conducting a business or undertaking) have a duty to ensure an adequate number of workers are trained to administer first aid, but what is an adequate number? For schools, which are generally classed as low risk workplaces, the recommendation as per the First Aid in the workplace Code of Practice 2021 is 1 first aider for every 50 workers in a low risk workplace. To determine what is an adequate number for a school, it is important to also consider excursions, camps, events, after hours and non-term time.
Yesterday, eight LEQ staff completed First Aid training to ensure our office has an adequate number of trained first aiders onsite.
