Finding Stillness In An Octopus Garden

The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14

‘Be Still’ is the theme for 2022 at Living Faith Lutheran Primary School. During Living Faith’s PD weeks, weaved amongst compliance training and preparations for the 2022 school year, was a series of activities pertaining to the ‘Be Still’ theme. Amongst these activities, staff watched My Octopus Teacher, a Netflix documentary, through a ‘Be Still’ lens. In order to solidify memories of deep dialogue and to experience their own ‘Be Still’ moments, all staff – from teachers through to the maintenance team – painted an octopus garden. Whilst it was intended this activity would take place on site with food trucks and iced drinks, Omicron had other plans. Consequently, dozens of painting kits were supplied to all staff so they could engage in the activities from home. Just as Living Faith fosters in students a range of soft skills including courage, risk-taking, perseverance, creativity, tenacity and problem-solving, the staff showcased their soft skills during these weeks, with agility and flexibility rating exceedingly highly.
