Welcome to Lutheran Education Queensland
Lutheran Education Queensland (LEQ) is the system authority and secretariat supporting and overseeing the 26 schools and 62 Early Childhood Services belonging to the Lutheran Church in Queensland. Those schools and services are found right across Queensland, providing Christ-centred education and care of excellence to children and students in their communities.
Our 26 schools have enrolled over 16,000 students and employ over 1,000 teachers with many more support staff. Those schools range in size from more than 2,000 students to just over 100. You will find them in many parts of Queensland and this site will help you learn more about each one of them.
The Lutheran Church has a long history of service to Queensland through education with our first schools being opened in the mid 1800s. Queensland’s first Lutheran school was at Mission Hill (present day Nundah), opening in the late 1830’s. Lutheran schools across Australia were closed by an act of Parliament in 1917, and in Queensland they only began to open again in 1945.
A special feature of many secondary Lutheran colleges is their commitment to outdoor education; our first outdoor education centre was established by St Peters Lutheran College at Ironbark in 1974. We were also amongst the first to have middle schooling, with our first middle school being opened in 1979, also at St Peters Lutheran College.
Our schools are all co-educational, and aim to be both accessible and affordable. They have a diverse student population with children of all faiths and denominations within their population.
Our Early Childhood and Outside School Hours Care Services
Our early childhood services include long day and occasional care centres, family day care services, kindergartens and outside school hours care services. Around 3,200 children use these services from Cairns to Moree NSW, Mount Isa to Cleveland.
Our aim is to encourage and support students, informed and sustained by the Word of God, to develop their God-given talents so that they may shape and enrich their world.
